Namecheckr Alternatives in 2026: What to Use Now

··8 min read

If your bookmark for Namecheckr stopped working, you are not imagining it. As of 2026-09-25, namecheckr.com shows a one-line placeholder page and the checker itself is gone. The good news is that the job it did is easy to replace, and some of it is worth doing better than Namecheckr ever did.

Here is the short answer. If you already have a name, a free multi-platform checker like NameCheckup, Namechk or Namecheckly does what Namecheckr did. If you want deeper domain search, use Instant Domain Search. If you are still choosing a name, skip the checker and use a generator that checks availability as it goes, such as Nymly, Namify or DoTrademark. And whichever route you pick, add a trademark search, because a handle checker does not cover that part.

Below we break down what Namecheckr handled for you, which tool now covers each piece, and how to pick without trying all of them.

What happened to Namecheckr

We track this because our Nymly vs Namecheckr comparison still gets readers looking for the old tool. From 2026-07-26 to 2026-08-02, namecheckr.com returned a 503 error on every check we ran. When we checked again on 2026-09-25, the homepage loaded, but only to show a single sentence on a blank page. Every other path we tried, including the old search pages, returned a 404.

The domain still resolves, so someone still controls it. It could come back. But there is nothing there to use today, and there has not been for about two months.

KnowEm, the other long-running name checker a lot of people used alongside it, is in worse shape. On 2026-09-25 knowem.com had no DNS records at all, which means the site does not load anywhere. If KnowEm was your backup, you need a new one too.

What Namecheckr actually did for you

Before picking a replacement, it helps to be precise about the job. Namecheckr did three things, and it did them for a name you already had.

  1. Domain availability. Is the .com free, and if not, which other extensions are?
  2. Social handle availability. Can you get the same handle on the platforms you care about?
  3. One search for both. You typed the name once instead of opening twenty tabs.

It did not suggest names. And a free domain plus a free handle tells you nothing about trademarks. Those two gaps matter more than they look, and we come back to both below.

Like-for-like replacements, for when the name is decided

These three tools do what Namecheckr did. You type a name, and they check it across domains and social platforms in one pass. All three were live and free when we checked them on 2026-09-25.

NameCheckup

NameCheckup is the closest match to the Namecheckr experience. One search box, a grid of domain extensions from .com and .io to country codes like .co.uk and .de, and a long list of username checks underneath. Its own FAQ says it is free, needs no account, and covers networks including Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Twitch, Snapchat, Threads, Bluesky and GitHub. It also has a separate checker for game tags on platforms like Minecraft, Roblox and Steam, which is handy if you are naming a creator brand.

Namechk

Namechk has been around since 2009, according to its about page, and describes itself as a free username and domain search tool. The homepage promises checks across over 30 domains and more than 90 social media accounts. It asks you to pass a CAPTCHA before it runs, so it is a little slower to start than NameCheckup.

Namecheckly

Namecheckly says it offers unlimited free searches with no account and no card. It checks popular extensions like .com, .io and .ai plus a long list of country codes, and handles on Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Reddit. It also has AI name suggestions, though the core of the product is still the checker.

For the domain side, go deeper

Multi-platform checkers show a fixed list of extensions. If the domain is the part you care about most, a dedicated domain search will serve you better.

Instant Domain Search checks availability across 800-plus extensions as you type, and says it has offered free domain search since 2005. Two features make it more than a checker. Its bulk search lets you paste or import a list of names and check all of them at once, which is the fastest way to test a shortlist. And it has a free US trademark search, refreshed daily from USPTO data, sitting right next to the domain results. It is an ICANN accredited registrar, so it will offer to sell you the domain, but you do not have to buy anything to search.

If you are still choosing a name, a checker is the wrong tool

Here is the trap with any checker. You think of a name, check it, find it is taken, think of another, check again. A checker can only ever tell you that the names you already thought of are gone. After enough rounds, it is easy to settle for something you do not love.

If you are still at that stage, the better move is a tool that generates names and checks availability at the same time, so every name you see is one you can actually use.

  • Nymly (that is us) generates brandable names from a short description of your business and checks each one across ten domain extensions (.com, .net, .org, .io, .co, .ai, .app, .dev, .tech and .online) and social handles on TikTok, YouTube, GitHub, LinkedIn and Patreon. You get 5 free credits when you sign up, and each credit runs one generation of 10 names. After that it is $9 for 50 credits, one-time.
  • Namify generates names and matching domains across 300-plus extensions, and runs a USPTO trademark screen and username checks in the same search. Its FAQ says you only pay when you register a domain.
  • DoTrademark leans hardest on trademarks. Its free tier gives you 24 generated names, 10 domain checks and 3 EU trademark searches a month, checking 8 extensions. Paid plans start at $49 a month and add US trademark searches.
  • Namelix, from the team behind Brandmark, is a free AI name generator with domain availability. It is good for sparking ideas, and its site talks about names and domains rather than social handles.
  • Nametastic is a domain name generator that checks 50-plus extensions per search. You get 2 free credits on signup, and a standard search costs 2. After that it is $9.99 a month for 40 credits, or packs from $2.50 for 10 credits.

The part a checker does not cover

A free .com and a free handle do not mean you can use a name. If someone already holds a trademark on it in your market, the domain is the least of your problems. A handle checker is not built for this, and none of the three above list a trademark check.

The official USPTO trademark search is free, and Instant Domain Search, Namify and DoTrademark all put some form of trademark screen in front of you. Treat any of these as a first pass. It will catch the obvious clashes. It is not the same as advice from a trademark attorney before you spend real money on a brand.

One caveat about Instagram

Whichever checker you use, be careful with Instagram results. In our own testing, Instagram now gives the same answer to a logged-out lookup whether a handle is taken or free, which makes an automated check unreliable. Nymly stopped reporting Instagram as available or taken for that reason, and links you to the profile so you can check it yourself in ten seconds. If a tool gives you a confident green tick for Instagram, open the profile before you trust it. Our guide to checking username availability on every platform covers the other quirks worth knowing.

How to choose in two minutes

  1. Is the name decided? If yes, use NameCheckup or Namechk for handles and domains, then run it through the USPTO search. You are done.
  2. Is the domain the part you are stuck on? Use Instant Domain Search, and throw your whole shortlist into bulk search at once.
  3. Still choosing? Stop checking one name at a time. Use a generator that checks as it goes, pick the three names you like best, then screen those for trademarks.

Namecheckr was a good tool for a narrow job. The honest upgrade is not finding another tool that does exactly the same thing. It is making sure the name you check is one worth checking in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Namecheckr down for good?

We cannot say for good, only for now. On 2026-09-25 namecheckr.com loaded a one-line placeholder page instead of the checker, and every other path we tried returned a 404. Before that it returned a 503 error on every check we ran from 2026-07-26 to 2026-08-02. We re-check before each update.

What is the closest free replacement for Namecheckr?

For the same job, one name checked across domains and social handles in a single search, NameCheckup, Namechk and Namecheckly were all live and free on 2026-09-25. None of them generate names, so they suit you best if the name is already decided.

Can any of these tools check a trademark?

Some can screen for one. Instant Domain Search has a free US trademark search built on USPTO data, Namify screens names against USPTO records, and DoTrademark checks EU and US databases on its paid plans. The official USPTO search is free. A screen is a first pass, not legal clearance.
